Ho has made a pretty fucking great reminder of class divisions and of how we let the rich dehumanize us. We marvel when the wealthy rub elbows with us filthy turds. We admire the ones who stick up for our rights. We capitulate to them to make our decisions, and then are thrilled when they actually choose ones that benefit us.
Ocean’s 8 is polished and refined, glossy like those two-inch thick fashion magazines full of crap nobody ever wears. That shit is a circle jerk for people who give a rat’s ass what other people’s shoes cost.
It’s a little ragged and dirty, smells a little sweaty and like cheap pot. It wants to be a Richard Linklater movie, like maybe Slacker or Boyhood, full of little things that sneakily add up to more. The problem is, the tiny moments are just tiny, out of context.
The Lost City of Z is as long and as boring as a holiday meal with old people. Second, it has all the trappings, all the fancy stemware, manners and never-raised voices.
Lords of Chaos is the largely true story of dumb-ass Norwegian metalheads who let their unfocused anger get away from them.
Lady Bird was fucking delightful. This is a damn good movie. I still don’t get teenaged girls, but the movie is so genuine and so plausible that I may have gained a little understanding of teenaged girls.
Good Time is decent. It’s smart in moments and dumb overall, but only genius in a vacuum. It will probably find a cult following because it’s grimy, amoral, and has a superficial resemblance to Tarantino-esque violence and crime.
Brad is a passive shithead. He complains a lot, in voiceover and on screen, but the most action he takes is to toss and turn in bed. Oh, and the one scene where he has a tickle fight with his teenaged son.
I don’t regret seeing BlacKkKlansman, despite the title’s stupid-ass spelling of the title–seriously, it feels like something a board room full of old men would think sounded cool and urban.
I worried I’d struggle understanding the characters, their histories and motivations. “Wait, why did that fat guy just bite her?” and “Who is Choochie and why did the girl with the Juggalo tattoo say she wanted to kill him?”
