Every February 2nd, Millbankers gather on the Haunted Knoll in Ottoman Park to wait for a very special visitor.  He’s shy, furry and spends a lot of time curled up in his burrow.  It’s Millbank Monte!  We know that if he sees his shadow, we will have six more weeks of winter.  And, if he does not see his shadow, spring will be here in a mere month and a half.

Millbank Monte did not disappoint us this year.  City Councilman Gary Shanks opened the festivities by issuing the Millbank Monte call and leaving the bait (a pound of cooked bacon and a six pack).  Monte appeared after much sniffing of the air and pawing of the ground.  Obviously, even a friendly crowd can make Monte nervous (this is why we ask all Millbankers to leave their pets and weapons at home on Monte Day!).

And when the fuzzy guy reached the Haunted Knoll, the sun emerged from behind the cloud and seemed to glow like a halo all around him.  You could hear all the Millbankers ooh and aah at the inspiring site.  But Monte wasn’t impressed with his shadow, no matter that it serves as weather oracle for the entire Tri-City area.  He quickly turned and fled the crowd, muttering, “Can’t get any peace ‘round here!”

Millbank citizens left the Knoll happily anticipating sunny weather and spring flowers; many visited local merchants to buy Monte merchandise to commemorate the occasion.  Thank you Millbank Monte!  See you next year!
