MILLBANK – “Everyone is going to die, no question. Even you are going to die,” says Othel Maxwell with a giant grin on his face. “My job is to make sure that you leave a pretty corpse.”

Shady Grove Mortuary has been the resting place of Millbank’s dead have gone for the past sixty-five years. “My dad, Rustace A. Maxwell, started this business when he moved to Millbank in 1950 and noticed the smell from all the unburied citizens. All those corpses were like gold, stinky gold.” Shady Grove Mortuary has since been renowned for quality and service in the funeral industry ever since.

Death may be eternal, but funerals have their fashions just like everything else. “Cremation started getting ‘hot’, excuse the pun, about twenty-five years ago, and now people are requesting not only to be cremated but to have their ashes planted with a tree, or some such. They want their death to be as meaningful as their life.”

To that end, Maxwell will be teaming up with Mr. Sofa Guy’s Sofa Kingdom Warehouse Emporium to create a whole line of furniture, called Eternal Revery. Couches, end tables and even ottomans will feature frames incorporating the cremains of loved ones. “Did you have fun times sitting with ol’ Granddad on the sofa, watching the football game? Well, those memories don’t have to disappear, just because Granddad is no longer living. You know, sometimes people say that they feel their lost loved ones in their heart or looking over their shoulders. With Eternal Revery, the ones left behind will think of their loved ones every time they park their keisters.”

“People have such a funny idea about funeral directors, like they are sad and mournful all the time, or obsessed by death. But we like to have fun, just like anyone.” Maxwell is a member of the Celebrity Playho Players and has recently joined the local pickleball league. “I thought it would be good for business,” he says, “all those old folks running around, but then I found out how fun it is, and I can’t stop!” That sense of fun keeps folks coming back to Shady Grove, that and the fact that Shady Grove is the only mortuary in town.

Shady Grove Mortuary is located at 6th and Chaise in Millbank and is open from 9 am – 5 pm, Monday – Friday. Please ask about special services such as horse carriages, videographers and graveside interpretive dance.
